If you deconstruct a suit, it’s kind of boring. In fact, one of the few ways to infuse some style into a suit is by picking the right tie. Most men (or women shopping for men) usually purchase a tie without considering the bigger picture (e.g. the outfit). Unwise. A tie is a keystone fashion item – it needs to match the suit, shirt, and pocket-square. While a great tie selection can elevate an outfit, a poor selection will destroy it.

When buying a tie, its ideal (if not impractical) to bring along the suit and shirt you’re trying to match it to. Of course, you can always find a similar suit and shirt within the store you’re shopping at. As a general guideline, if your suit is dark, opt for bold colors. If your suit is light, look for something a little muted.

Choosing the exact color of your tie depends on the color of your suit and shirt. If your suit has a colored pinstripe, try to find a similar colored tie. The same rule applies for fine colored stitching found within the shirt.

Another factor to consider is what type of tie pattern best completes the overall look.
A plain shirt forgives even the loudest ties (as long as the colors match), but a striped or checkered shirt will require a more carefully planned tie selection. If in doubt, try asking a few people at the store for their opinion.

Know your size. The standard length and width of a tie are 55-57″ and 3.5-4″ respectively. However, if you are taller or shorter than average, double check the length of the tie before you purchase it. The bottom tip of your tie should touch your belt buckle.

Lastly, always keep the occasion in mind when purchasing a tie. What works in the office almost certainly won’t cut it on the red carpet.
