Red Carpet Dress

Ah, the wardrobe malfunction – a fine piece of American tradition. Although the term “wardrobe malfunction” only entered the pop-culture lexicon following Janet Jackon’s 2004 Super Bowl (aka Nipplegate) debacle – the concept of the engineered wardrobe malfunction has longstanding roots. Since the golden age of Hollywood, up-and-coming celebrities (or those fading from the spotlight) have used the WM to get the public’s attention.

We’ve decided to look back at some of the most unforgettable wardrobe malfunctions to occur on the red carpet. Some of these moments were no doubt engineered for publicity (ala the celebrity sex tape) – but others were unquestionably accidental (and embarrassing). Enjoy.

7. Lindsay Lohan – Boob Slip at the 2006 GM Fashion Show

The then 19-year old Lindsay Lohan appeared at the 10^th Annual General Motors Celebrity Fashion Show in a scant and open black dress. During a photography session, the loose-fitting dress exposed Lohan’s right breast. A PR spokesperson informed Ms. Lohan of the matter – to which she just giggled and moved on.

Verdict: Unintentional, but clearly not embarrassed.

6. Svetlana Metkina – Boob Slip at the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS 2007 Event

You probably haven’t heard of Svetlana Metkina…yet. The popular Russian actress is poising herself for an American film debut. Our guess – she’ll end up as a toe-tagged love interest in an upcoming Bond film.

Verdict: So. Very. Intentional.

5. Anne Hathaway – See Through Shirt at the School of Rock Premiere (2003)

The up-and-coming Hathway (pre Devil Wears Prada) was caught by surprise by the flashbulbs of photographers at the School of Rock premiere. Years later, Hathaway confessed to Ellen DeGeneres that see cried for four days following the incident.

Verdict: Unintentional, but we have to wonder if the now-often-topless Hathaway would be so bold if not for this incident.

4. Tara Reid – Epic Boob Slip at Puff Daddy’s 35^th Birthday Party (2004)

Fresh off of a botched breast-augmentation surgery, Reid appeared at Cipriani in a loose-fitting black dress. As she posed for photographers, the dress slipped off her left shoulder revealing her entire left breast for no less than 15 seconds! The event was covered from every angle (including videos), and subsequently coined the term “Epic Boob Slip”.

Verdict: At first blush, it seems impossible not to realize that one’s entire breast is kissing the sweet breeze. But then again, a post-op boob with a silicone shield might not be so sensitive. We’re undecided.

3. Sophie Marceau – Boob Slip at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival

At the Cannes premiere of “Where the Truth Lies”, French actress Sophie Marceau’s top collapsed under its own weight, completely revealing her left breast. Marceau reacted quickly, but not before numerous photos documented the event.

Verdict: Unintentional. Marceau took the event in good stride and seemed more amused than embarrassed.

2. Geri Halliwell – Upskirt at the 2008 Children’s Bafta Awards

This former Spice Girl learned the hard way that expensive fashion doesn’t always equate to well-stitched. The stitching on Haliwell’s paneled dress came undone in the most embarrassing of areas. Thankfully, Geri has nothing to be ashamed of.

Verdict: Totally unintentional.

1. Alexanda Kerry – See Through Mishap on the Cannes Red Carpet (2004)

At the height of John Kerry’s campaign for the American presidency, his eldest daughter, Alexandra was blind-sided by flashbulbs in France. Five years later, her totally see-through dress is still a perennial favorite on “What were they thinking” lists.

Verdict: Unintentional, and for many Kerry supporters in 04’, unforgivable.
