The 2009 awards season is officially heating up. Most recently, the 51st Annual Grammy Awards offered a great look at today’s trends. Here’s what we learned:

Pink is In

The recent incarnation likely started with Cameron Diaz at the Golden Globes. Then we saw Slumdog Millionaire’s Freida Pinto gorgeously draped in pink at the BAFTA Awards. Next up, Katy Perry.

Known for her unconventional and comic style, this pop diva surprised every one in her exquisite soft pink Basil Soda gown. A retro hairstyle and Jacob & Co jewelry perfectly complemented the look.

Sara Bareilles, the best female pop vocalist of 2009, appeared in strapless pink ruffles – a divine piece from the Luisa Beccaria Spring 2009 collection. For accessories, she chose fine jewelry and a Daniel Swarovski silver clutch.

Awesome. The only word to describe Letoya Luckett’s fuchsia pink mini prom dress. The sexy, short, satin dress was perfectly accessorized with a snake-skin patterned clutch and baby blue pumps.

Carrie Underwood, unquestionably one of the evenings best dressed, showed up in a gold beaded number from Zuhair Murad Resort 2009 collection. A golden Nancy Gonzalez clutch completed the look.

Black is Beautiful

Miley Cyrus made her way down the red carpet in an asymmetric Max Azria couture gown and Mimi So jewelry. Not much to say except – simple, stylish, and timeless.

Taylor Swift also played it safe in black, just like her best friend Miley. Her Kaufman Franco jersey gown with leather strapping was attractive, but not nearly as notable as the singer’s gorgeously curly blond hair.

British beauty Kate Beckinsale was spotted in a drop dead gorgeous Reem Acra gown. Frankly,  we think she should have saved it for the upcoming Oscars and picked something lighter and shorter for the Grammys.

Off the Beat in Blue

Sheryl Crow looked awesome in her electric blue asymmetric prom gown by Toni Maticevski. Her golden mane, loosely down on the shoulder, was a nice touch. The 9 time Grammy award winner’s latest album, Detours, was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album – so Sheryl definitely has something to smile about.

Toni Maticevski found his way onto Kim Kardashian, as she sported a silvery white dress from the Spring 2009 collection. Christian Louboutin Fortuna sling-backs completed the ensemble.

Flop Show

For all the bright spots on the 2009 Grammy Red Carpet, uber-heiress Paris Hilton was a total dud.. She looked awful in this Versace Spring 2003 mini prom. Yuck.
